FAMILY MEMBERS WHO JUST DON'T GET IT

By Julia Caza Sunday, March 11, 2007
My best advice is to ignore them.  There isn't any way they can possibly understand what it's like to have bipolar disorder.  Many people are scared of this.  Many just don't want to know about it.  Educate them if possible, with brochures and information from your doctors, but don't believe you can always change them and their attitudes.  People tend to be a bit more enlightened nowadays, but there can still be a stigma attached...  I had to give up on this long ago.  Noone in my extended family has ever even asked me how I am.  You are very fortunate if you have a supportive, understanding family.  It is quite rare.  Look for good friends who don't think you're a freak, who realize you are just a regular person...because that's what we all are.

Whatever your interests, get out into the community and get involved in something to do with things you are passionate about; volunteer; check for new classes to take; look for support groups, etc.  Do not limit yourself, though, to people with bipolar disorder, as many will acccept you as you are and won't freak out about it.
