Total meds change, WOW what now?

By Big_Chuck1978 Wednesday, October 29, 2008

I just started seeing a new Psychiatrist and is trying to stabilize my disorder (Bi-Polar)

My first meeting went well, she placed me on 1000mg of Depakote, Amytriptalene, and Vistaril. None of these helped my Depression, anxiety, and other issued with my Bi-Polar

So I explained to her today that these meds were NOT making any changes in my roller coaster of a life.

She put me on Abilify 10mg,Celexa 10 mg,and trazodone 50 mg and I see her on Dec1st,

When I arrived at Walgreens I was amazed that my Abilify was NOT covered by my insurance, I carry BCBS for gods sakes they wanted over $400.00 for 30

Luckily she gave me 3 weeks of samples of the Abilify,

 The questions I have is

The people that DO take Abilify, does your insurance cover it or is there another way to get them at a lower amount??

Does anyone take celexa,If so Does this work for you??

Does anyone take the Trazodone?? Does this work for you??

Just wanna get some input from others that are going what I'm going through....

I am also dealing from Chronic Pain so do any of these help with that also??

I have asked her for xanax but she doesn't wanna give me that because its very addictive...

Any advice or coments will be helpful

 Thanks

I am just dumfounded

good to know your on sort of a recovery chuck, I have bcbs and had the same problem as you with abilify, but i ended up paying cash because my doctor raved about it, I tried it for 2months and i just had to stop, i hate that medication man, it was a frign nightmare for me and i had so many side effects it wasnt funny, it made me sick for years. their are tons of lawsuits against abilify so be weary, maybe you will have better luck but i say screw paying that price their are way to many other safer drugs available, one subsitute for abilify that bcbs will cover for $25 month 60 60mg tabs is Geodon, it has ben around for years and is extremely safer. maybe that will do better. The others amytriptiline and vistaril are used for many things, like pain, toothace, ect..

KEEP the faith honey,

I too was moved from med to med to med...and finally have come up with a combo that i can afford and yet i know that since i am medication resistant that i will be changing again once these stop their potency.

I currently am on Lamictal, (was on abilify but it has been changed to Risperdone and Benzytropline to counteract its sides) , KLONOPIN is the my main crutch and is a replacement for xanex....my pdoc too doesn't like the dependency of xanex, I DO take Trazadone and it works for me to sleep, and I am also on low low does of Zoloft,

Please remember it takes a while to see what meds will work for you for each of our constitutions are different and well, it is hard for them to find just the right and perfect combo sometimes, hang in there.....please.....and know that with working with your pdoc and letting them know what doesn't work and what does...well that is the best way to find the answers..

I wish you the best....remember nothing changes in a day and some of the meds take up to 30 days to see results!!!
sincerely and sending positive energy your way

PS are you also in therapy, THAT is a big key to my coping, it is proven that talk therapy or other kinds of therapy DO help bps MORE when in combination with meds....just a thought

Therapy other than talking to my doctor, NO. I have seen her twice so far and feel comfortable with her. I feel that she is trying her best and I had the best night's sleep last night on that Trazadone

You might get some feedback from your doctor.  The insurance can give you information on forumulary drugs that they will pay for.  You can ask your doctor if the alternatives would be as effective.  She might continue to give you samples for awhile if she can or have an idea on an alternative that won't cost you too much.  Hang in there.  It just takes some time to get it right.
