An update on the countless benefits of living with bipolar

By nevadafrenchy Friday, September 10, 2010

Bipolar: having two poles... opposite extremes.  As a general rule the universe is balanced by two polar opposites from the atomic level to the galaxy, all energy strives to balance itself out.

Living with bipolar it is not hard to see the resemblance between the importance of being balanced in the physical universe and being balanced psychologically.  The cool thing about living with bipolar is that we know both extremes and are thus in a unique position within society to understand both sides of everything.  It is both a blessing and a curse but nonetheless something that needs to be understood in order to take advantage of its implications. The importance of balance is quintessential to overcoming any obstacle in the path of living with bipolar.

I like to say I've felt the highest of highs, the lowest of lows and everything in between.  When I say, "I know how you feel," I really do know how you feel. At times I have trouble taking sides but on the other hand, being cognitive of and thinking logically about being bipolar when I am in a certain mood, I am able to use this same logical thinking in every day life.  How do we balance this situation out?  How can we come to a compromise? For those of us with bipolar, it really shouldn't be that hard because we understand where "they" are coming from. So before going into any situation where I know I will have to be "on top of my game" and sharp I prepare myself to read and act on the mood of others as opposed to what is coming out of their mouths.  I can read people based on their expressions and mannerisms because I have experienced these before.  If you are living with bipolar and you have never thought of using it to your advantage in this way before go out and observe. For someone living with bipolar it is not a skill that has to be learned, but one that comes from having "been there" ourselves.

If you can do this, you can be a master negotiator in business, an amazingly fair yet great lawyer, or an asset to any political campaign.  Again, the trick is to know the type of person you are talking to when you are using your unique skills. Can they see both sides of the situation? Or are they staunch in their opinions and unwilling to compromise?  Either way, there's always a way to compromise, deep down everyone wants to compromise.  But just like being bipolar, sometimes polar opposites means constant disarray and conflict.

The world needs people with bipolar, we are the mediators, the people who can bring all sides together and come to a compromise.  Understanding ourselves and our ups and downs are an asset once we figure it out, not a liability.  The power to see both sides is a rare gift, cherish it, don't EVER be ashamed of it.
