My perception and 2.5 cents, and it's all that it is.
My husband isn't and hasn't been diagnosed with any type of mental illness though he'd come close to having Narcisstic Personality Disorder if diagnosed.
He is also 49, soon to be 50 (next month). He has been with several different women over the last 9 years and for the last year and a half has been with a woman who is the complete opposite of what he has always said he wanted.
I have Bipolar. I've never cheated on my husband. I've never thought of cheating on my husband nor acted on any of my impulses or desires with any other while married to my husband, living with him as man and wife. NEVER. I know it's wrong.
I won't say it's been terriably easy cause it hasn't.. my husband abused me over the years and has cheated on me many many times. Due to this I'm in the final processes of divorcing him myself. Yet, I knew to cheat would be wrong and I never did.
So... I wouldn't necessarily attribute your husband's entire behavior solely on Bipolar.
Would having Bipolar make things perhaps worse? Quite possibly but is the entire thing and all his other affairs solely due to Bipolar? No.
There are some men who see themselves getting older, middle spreading, hair receding, pants with elastic coming at them, and they freak out and start buying sports cars - picking up GFs almost young enough to be illegal (and some don't care if it's illegal) - and spending money out the whazoo. All in the effort to regain some sense of male stamina and youth before all falls and withers.
