outwitting over shopping during an episode

By rayssemi Sunday, December 30, 2007

When you have a crisis and you tend to shop--Have someone who cares and you trust hold your cards and checkbook. If you don't know you do this yet- pay attention to what you buy all the time. Ask if you need it or if you just want it-- are you going to use it this week or are you shopping ahead for oh say next season? If you are making a purchase you don't need or won't use immediately- you probably have a problem. Only you can make that call. The other big spend -- are you eating out more than usual? That is a tough one to make. if you think you are you are gonna gain more weight than money. I decided years ago that if I could reason out the purchase I knew where I was mentally. If I am falling apart at the seams the bank knew first.

Racing thoughts- slowing them down or making them stop

Oh yes, I love to spend money when I am a little manic and I do not remember sometimes when I do it. why do we do this is it to take our mind off the mental anguish.

My wife and I are both bipolar; budgets well and just finished the majority of our Christmas shopping for next year with savings of up to 80% off. If you’re out buying a new fishing boat and live in the desert…there maybe an issue. Even aka normal people can spend beyond their means... so staying within your budget is very important.

If you have the extra funds available, now is a great time to find bargains on great birthday, Christmas and anniversary gifts for the coming year. We set aside money throughout the year for just this occasion. In the long run we come out ahead and save $$$ by doing so. Creating and living within a budget is very important.

Hi rayssemi...Thanks for the good suggestions. Almost all women LOVE to shop (it's inherent).  And as you know, bipolars can get into trouble with shopping quite easily.

I TRY not to impulse shop, make lists and attempt to stick to them.  Another thing I do is try to walk away from an item for 30 minutes or so before conisdering buying - sometimes it loses its appeal after that.

Shopping smart is something we bioplars need to work on.
