Evening Dinner Fatigue Normal??

By LifeontheIsland Tuesday, November 04, 2008

This is new, as of about a 5 weeks ago... Just about when I started taking Abilify and Citalopram. I have extreme fatigue as soon as I am done eating dinner. I'm so tired that I see double, stumble around like I am drunk, and can barely function. It lasts about 2-3 hours and then I feel "normal" again.

Sometimes I will go to bed and sleep for the 2-3 hours, and then get up for a few hours until it is bedtime.

This is really putting a damper on enjoying my evenings with my husband.

Has anyone else felt like this? Could it be the meds? Could it be my BPD?

Thanks,

Cathy

I do take Abilify & other meds & find in the morning I have trouble focussing & being alert & then staying alert throughout the day.  It got to be dangerous as I fell asleep once when driving & only saved myself when I veered off the road & hit the gravel shoulder & the sound of the tires on the gravel woke me up.

I was prescribed Provigil to counteract this side effect.  I've been on it about 10 years & it is great.  Not addictive & the literature is showing that it is very helpful in the treatment of bipolar.  My provider had to fight with the ins. co. to cover it (it is very expensive), but she won by providing all the literature, etc. that was showing positive results.

Definitely talk to your pdoc.  Being tired & dizzy is just plain unacceptable to me.  I need a better quality of life than that.

Hi Cathy...I am familiar with Abilify, but not with Citalopram.  Abilify and most other atypical antipsychotics cause some fatigue.  The older antipsychotics were much harder on us.

It could be either of the meds that is causing the fatigue.  Or it could possibly be the combination of the two that's causing the problem. I have morning fatigue for a couple hours - I take my Abilify before I go to bed.  Could it be the time of day that you take you meds that gives you the ill effect?  Talk to your doctor.

The hummingbird is an awesome little creature.  I have feeders in my back yard.  Here in Michigan we have only the ruby throated variety.  My daughters in Portland have many more varieties.  Hummingbirds lift my spirits when I'm down, or anytime actually.

Thanks for your reply.

The hummingbird is very special to me, too. Once, I got to hold a whole nest of three baby hummers. It was so awesome! Another flew into my house and rode out on my (ex) husband's finger to be set free, after it got caught in between our vertical blinds and our sliding glass door.

I appreciate your views and the views of everyone who responded to me. It has GOT TO BE a side effect. I will tell my Dr. and try something else. I already stopped taking it although the adds on tv say to never stop until you talk to your Dr.

I'm fed up and stopping a psych drug has never done horrible things to me before. (that I know of)

Thanks again.

I'll keep posting my pics.

Very Very Cool...I had a similar experience once while on my H-moon is Jamaica.

Hang in there, maybe abilify simply is the wrong atypical for you. You and your doctor fwill figure it out together.  Good luck.

Thats an abilify side effect, switch meds, screw taking another med to counteract another. Its a dangerous side effect too, consider driving, or working with that. Im suprised your not complaining about that after lunch also.
