Peer Support Specialist (Mentor)

By Joe Buck Saturday, March 08, 2008

I am a 58 yr. old bipolar,( type 2) diagnosed at 50 years of age. I'm still amazed that I'm still kicking. The disorder (to say the least) has greatly diminished my life but refuse to throw in the towel. But getting away from my life details, let's get to the meat and potatoes. In 2001, I became a speaker for the DBSA's Speakers Guild. Give speeches to anyone that will listen, for society to gain knowledge of brain disorders. Knowledge will help lessen discrimination. "The only good is knowledge and the only evil is ignorance." Socrates (469BC - 399BC). I am now persuing to become a mental health certified peer support specialist. The following URL is a article from the DBSA's site discribing the program. http://www.associationforum.org/resources/signatureStory.asp?objectID=5110 . The URL below is DBSA's Real Recovery Audio Podcasts. Number 040 is about Certified Peer Specialists. Enjoy the other podcasts if you are interested. This forum purpose is to get feedback if anyone got support from a certified peer support specialist. All comments are accepted. In return I will try to answer questions or direct URL's for information. Joe Buck

Hi Joe,

Someone was asking about peer to peer support training back in december. You can read the posting here. I will also cross post your information for that person. GJ Gregory also has a posting where he talks about NAMI having peer to peer support groups. You can read the full article here.

Hope you find this information helpful.

Take care and stay in touch!
