Question about the teen years and Bipolar Disorder

By Merely Me Wednesday, April 06, 2011

Hi there

I have a question for any of the experts or members of Bipolar Connect.  I have a friend who has a son who is just about to finish high school.  He has been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and he is having a particularly rough time right now with a manic phase.  He is engaging in some reckless behavior, is extremely irritable, and is saying some very hurtful things to mom and dad.  They are worried for his safety and would like to know what suggestions you might have.  He is on medication but is also using alcohol and smoking pot.

My friend would like to know...what did you most want from your family when you were a teen or young adult and dealing with Bipolar Disorder?  What sort of reaction is best when trying to give emotional support to a teen who is being verbally aggressive?

Thank you ahead of time for your responses.
