Smoking Tied to Suicide Risk in Bipolar Disorder?????

By Eric Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Sometime you read things that make you go hmmmmmm. Wonder where the funding came from for this research because they could have saved tons of money and time had they just asked one of us well informed people living with the illness how smoking relates to our illness.

It's very common for us to turn toward anything that would provide any relief of the thoughts and symptoms that come with our illness. The chemical make-up of nicotine acts as a relaxing agent when we get over stressed.

I would also guess this same study group are made up of non-smokers or even worse ex-smokers that have kicked the habit and act like some in the 12 step program. When I get over stressed it is not uncommon to have three cigarettes lit in my mouth and one up my a** just as a safety measure to control the thoughts.

The article goes on to say that 5 out of the 31 patients actually went on to try and commit suicide while only 3 tried that were non-smokers. Well...the 5 tried because the research group tried to limit how many cigarettes these people could smoke and the 3 from the non-smoking group would not have tried had they had access to a cigarette.

While were seeing funding being cut to help us get the medications we need...I see these ridicules studies being paid with monies that could really be a benefit to us more if it were better spent.

Ok...I am now stepping off my soapbox with only one cigarette lit.

I would not doubt it. I am BP and I smoke.

Unlike many others, I started smoking in my 30's. I love my cigarettes. Is it a death wish? I don't know. I don't want to die of smoking related illness, but cannot seem to quit. It is a struggle as I would like to quit. But I really love my cigarettes.....

Everyone I know smokes.

I know that smoking helps me deal with my BP disorder, that is for sure.

Best of luck to you!

Right on, Eric.  I agree with you 100%.

There's lots of wasted $$ on research and this is a prime example.  Our taxpayer money should be spent for better and wiser things.  Who monitors and approves this bullcrap anyway?

Folks like us with mood disorders definitely smoke much more than the general population.  Something like 40% of us are hooked.  I am no exception.  Nicotine often gets me thru stressful days.  Sure I'd like to quit, but today's just not the day.

Always look forward to reading your posts.

Good post Eric.

I agree, stupid study.  It had caught my eye right away.

I hope this doesn't mean they will get rid of the smoking areas in the psych-hospitals.

I've been smoking for 30 years.

My doctor has been riding me for some time to quit smoking, says the meds don't work all the way if I smoke.  I finally said I would this year.

Cigs work to get me to chill out.

Eric, I love your posts and how you think. Thank you.

I quit about two years ago and if you said "hey smokefan (tony stewart #14 fan) would trade 50 lbs to quit smoking", I would of said, "hell no".

Still not smoking based on the wasted money that I don't want to waste in the future. Though I am around it a lot (playing in a band) and I don't care about being around it. I quit to support my wife (who still hasn't). Stress and family are her triggers which pisses me off now that I have quit. I still don't understand and I may never. I just deal and accept her habit because I once had it. I still get upset when stress drivers her back to smoking. My wife is bipolar and stress is a major trigger. I never smoked, in my experience, because of stress so I find it hard to relate to be honest. It is not like smoking pot which I could see as a stress reducer or as a stress related trigger because of the buzz you get.

Eric, what are your thoughts?
