My partner was diagnosed in April with BP 2. He has been to an excellent specialist and I have been to have a talk to him too. It took him a couple of months of denial but now he has accepted that he has BP. The doc suggested Cognitive therapy, mood recognition and stress reduction before medication. At first I thought that my partner should be medicated and that the doc was a bit of a quack if he thought that soft therapy would help. You know I have been really surprised. I can't believe the changes. He has not had ANY angry outbursts since he started in therapy. He is learning to control his emotions and reduce the rollercoaster effect of his moods. He is learning to bring intense emotions back into normal range. He is learning to pull back the inclination for hypomania. He is taking responsibility for his condition and maintaining his mental health, recognising and reducing the triggers. He no longer blames other people for the way he is feeling. This doctor has a website on mood recognition. I can't remember it right now but will do a search and post it in advice for others to read. The doc is really pleased that my partner is doing so well. He is on 2 monthly visits now. He is also working through the cognitive therapy workbook. I'm not suggesting that this approach would work for everyone, but for him, so far so good....fingers crossed. I have also been on a journey to find out about BP. Thanks everyone for your support. I was at the point of ending the relationship when I first came onto this site and probably would have.....Without your ongoing support, the information, learning and sharing I would now not have my soulmate because I was not coping with his illness and neither was he. We are both learning. We do Yoga together and go to meditation, take long walks and swims at the beach. We are both better with less stress and more knowledge. PS I couldn't find the doc's website but came across a site called moodGYM developed by the Australian National University. It is a free, fun interactive program to develop mood recognition and recognise distorted thinking and others might like to try it.
