Generic brands? For and against

By Rusty Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Hi everyone,

I just read an interesting article on the generic brand of Wellbutrin http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21142869/

Apparently it is inferior quality to the brand name and can have serious side effects. The article states that the generic brands are not put through the stringent testing that the brand name drugs have.

I found it interesting because I have switched back to the brand name Zoloft after trying the generic brand for a few months and feeling really flat. My partner was taking the generic brand of his antidepressant for about 9 months. He changed back to the original brand name and can't believe how much better he feels. Has anyone else found that the generic brands are different/less effective than the brand name medications?

Not so sure

I think it depends on the medication.  My son has been on meds before where the doctor insisted we get name brand. In that case, we did. My insurance doesn't like to pay for name brand though so sometimes we have no other choice.

It is an interesting thought and one worth checking into.
