Q: Can anyone give suggestions as to good meds to use to fight the depressive side of bipolar?

My 16yo daughter cannot take any of the anti depressants even though she's on lithium and lamictal.  They send her into mania.  We have recently tried Ritalin which helps with the concentration but doesn't lift the mood.  Help

What antidepressants has she tried? Go on, give me the list... Has she at least tried several from different antidepressant groups?

I fear I may be obvious here, but if I've learned anything about meds and depression and bi polar disorder it is as much an art as a science, but the science is critial -- deeply unique to the body chemistry and situations of the individual.  I'm not a doctor, but this is one that you must be in close engagement with a medical professional.  If your current physician isn't helping you find a balance that works, there is no shame in seeking second opinions.

My daughter is 14 yrs old and she currently takes Lithium, Prozac, and Abilify. Mood is still not totally stable but she has more good days than bad.

The age of you daughter and mine plays a big part too. Remember that they are in an ocean of hormones. This factors into the depression as well.

Is your daughter very moody? Does her mood switch rapidly? If so, she's a rapid cycler (like my daughter). Our doctor says it is difficult to stabilize them when they switch so fast.

the best "cocktail" I have found is lamictal 100mg, celexa 20mg, in the morning and Seroqual 100mg at bedtime. my antidepressents are a cause of bipolar, at 16 its not easy most meds. are for 18 yos. and above
