Q: I have been diagnosed with mixed bi-polar. I have tried every med and combination of meds you can. None help. I think I have nutritional and hormone problems. Who can help me in Seattle?

From the research I've done if you are lacking in B & D vitamins, have a low thyroid and don't have enough of certain amino acids it can cause mental illness. Why do docs go strait for the psych meds with horrible side effects instead of trying nutrition supplementation. benzo's, ritalin and many other meds control symptoms, but do not correct the underlying cause. I want a nutritional prescription. I just found out that my vit D is at 16 and my thyroid is borderline. I had to ask to be tested for these..I should have been tested 25 yrs ago!

I think it is a great question for you to ask. I am a thyroid cancer survior and I can certainly relate to you.  I myself have found myself in the same situation nearly, so I started taking Omega 3, 6, and 9 vits. but I think I need more.  But I am a firm believer in natural remedies if at all possible.  I do know that when trying to have a child, we did all the most extreme fertile drugs and they didn't work.  It wasn't until I bought a book on curing infertility naturaly that we became preganant with in 30 days.

When modern western medicine started, it was mostly foods and herbs.  The whole idea of "balancing the humors" was not that far off of needing to keep hormone levels balanced.  I'm hoping getting on my new clean-food hormone-leveling eating plan will be the pill I have been looking for.  The only problem is I may not be able to afford clean (pesticide free) foods, and I have to find some unsuspecting sucker to sell my tupperware collection to (no plastics allowed).

When I took my nutrition class, we had to do a research paper on healing with food.  I, of course, chose bipolar.  The information I uncovered was very interesting.  It seems the best thing to do to treat bipolar is to eat a proper, balanced diet.  No kidding.  I am currently working my way through Master Your Metabolism, which is all about balancing the chemical levels in your body using proper eating (I hate to say "diet") and exercise.  I have noticed lately that when I eat man-made foods I go into manic phases.  By using this clean, balanced eating plan, I actually have an excuse to buy foods I love (Alaskan salmon) and try recipes from all over the world (beans and rice).  Once I can stick to it, we will see if it does, indeed, balance me out.  You may wish to give this book a read.  Otherwise, see an endocrinologist for tests of all your hormone levels.  That will tell you what needs to be fixed.

I meant to say depressive stages in the above paragraph.
