Q: How can I help my son help himself?

He was diagnosed with ADHD in the 3rd grade, then BiPolar 2 disorder when he was 17. He is now 21. He refuses to see a dr or medicate. He will not keep a job and has moved from place to place for 3 yrs. He's been living with his 22 y/o sister for about a year now. At times he acts like an immature teenager and she's had enough. She'sthreatening to kick him out if he doesn't straighten up. Nothing seems to phase him and I honestly believe he simply doesn't care. We're all worried. Help!

God I so understand where you are coming from.  My son is also bipolar, has just turned 20 and lives with a registered sex offender.  Judgement is very bad, cannot keep a job.  One day is happy the next is yelling at me because his life is horrible.  Yet as I have told him, he is making the choices.  Not me.  You can give them the guidance, the advice, but ultimately the things that do happen are there choices.  I had given up on my son for a few months, but he is my baby, 20 or not, and I know his mind isnt where it should be.  But you must also I want to say force them to kind of grow up.  Its so hard to watch them in self destruct mode sometimes.  While my son does live with this man, and this man is much older than my son, he has also taken care of my son, which to me as a mother, far outweighs his offender status.  Plus he knows how I feel.   My son also is epileptic.  He is sick to death of taking the meds.  But, to keep his sanity, he has no other choice.  There are times when he wishes he was dead.  Thats hard for me to take.  He's become violent with me, his father and his brothers.  Little things set him off.  Keeping a job, well thats a job in itself.  SSI has been denying him for the past two years yet he was on it when he was younger.   I so feel your pain.  Gosh this felt great to just get this off my chest.
