Q: Bad situations

Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm really depressed or if it's just the shitty situations I've been in lately and the negative people around me.  I have no energy, can't sleep and don't want to even get out of bed.  I'm trying to remove the problems in my life right now.  How do you know if the depression is real or it's just from situations?  I just want to cry all the time.Frown

Maddy,

Situations may lead to depression.  The term situtaional depression gets thrown around alot but when you get down to to it depression resides within the individual and is a combination of biological, psychological, and behavioral processes.  Exposed to the same negative situation, a group of individual can have varying reactions.  Some may  become severely depressed when others show few or no symptoms of depression.

The way a situation is processed can lead to an imbalance in neurotransmitter levels, just how one thinks about the event.  If you are genetically predisposed to depression, psychological and behavioral responses to a situation can trigger the biological process.  The thoughts and reactions to the situation and depression continue to worsen and perpetuate the depression.

The best course of action, if you know you are predisposed to depression is to see your psychiatrist to add or adjust medication, treating the biological component, and to see a therapist to address the psychological and behavioral patterns that may be contributing to your depression.

There will always be shitty situations.  How we think about and react to them can be improved.  Knowing and recognizing the initial symptoms of your depression, as an indicator to seek medical intervention, being aware of the consequences of not getting treatment and working with a therapist can help combat depression and get you through those shitty situations much easier.

Hey Maddy,

Depression is not always forever.  lots of times it is situational, and as you said life can be pretty crappy.  It's how we react to it.  Sometimes it's okay to take a time out and cry.  Our bodies are great at letting us know what we need and when.

All of your symptoms are part of depression.  I suggest you find a good therapist to talk to.

I tell my own patients, seeing me is not forever.  Sometimes you need it for awhile and then a tweek once every few months, or when something happens that puts you off balance.

My best advide; be good to you.  You know better than anyone if this is because of life circumstance or a creeping up of someting you have suspected all along.  See a therapist and have them help you figure it out!
