Q: I need other options PLEASE!!!!!!

My son was diagnosed with bipolar at the age of 6, He has been on different meds, recently he has switched from Abilify, 10mg PM and Depakote 1000 mg AM, and 750mg PM. To Zeprexa 15mg, and Clondidine .1 AM, .1 PM.   He is now 14 bigger in size due to his new meds and harder to manage at his therapeutic day school. I have learned from his mother and staff that he is becoming worse and worse with his anger.  Thrown cement blocks through class windows and has done some damage to the schools vans with rocks and boulders. They are telling me now that the only option is for him to go to a residential school.  I want my son to play sports in high school, I want him to experience his life.  He just started doing well in football after playing for the last 5 seasons in a row and when he is playing football he is focused more.  It gives him a chance to burn off his energy and he does really well academically. and My son's grades have never been a issue, he normally gets A's and B's.  I really do feel in my heart that there has to be other options than sending my son to a residential.  Please enlighten me on these.  Home schooling is not the answer.  But if someone has a solution to my dilemma, I am open to any and all suggestions.

Thank you for your time.

First thing is to talk to his doctor. The change of the medicine might of made a big impact on him since his body was used to it. It sounds like he is having a chemical imbalance due to the change in medicine. When you body has a change to it, it reacts differently. Just as if you get surgery and have something removed, your body is sending signals to your brain, telling your brain what needs to be done with that part of the body. The brain doesn't realize that part is missing and when it signals to fight a cold or disease from hitting that part, a signal goes to the brain and the brain then causes a reaction. Easy way of saying, when your missing something on your computer, your hard drive regonizes this and sends a error message to you to fix it. If you dont fix it, then the computer acts funny until it either crashes or gets fixed. I am not sure of how long he has been on the medicine that he was switched to but it sounds like he is having a chemical inbalance from the meds. This can be bad at this point, but if any signs or symptoms show from the meds could be the cause of his reactions. If nothing to serious, as the glass throwing and that is bad and I am not making excuses for him, and let the school know he has had a changed of medicine, also you may want to discuss this with his mom and ask his doctor to excuse him from school for a medical leave, so he has time to adjust to the medicine. When he cant focus in school, with a new medicine, how will he be able to focus at home or playing football. Give his body sometime to adjust to the medicine, but as well, discuss this with his mother and doctor. As him going to a alternative school, that is not a solution to this, as it can stop. Why make things harder forhim to adjust to when he is already trying to live in a kids place and feel like he is being punished for something he did, when it could just be the medicine trying to react. Also I did do reseach on Zeprexa and Clondidine and he needs to been seen by his doctor right away. He is showing signs of agression from the Zeprexa as that is under the side effects for this medicine and it should not be used in children under 18. With Zeprexa and Clondidine mixed together, this could be causing the trouble he is getting into. These two medicines together are really counteracting with him. I am no doctor to prescribe anything or suggest anything, but you should sit down with his mom and his doctor with him and try to get a better solution of medicine for him even if you have to find a child psychologist. When your a parent, you'll do anything you can to make things better for them and changing schools at this point is not a better solution for him. I hope this helps out a lot.

Thank you first of all for your quick response.  I am going to recommend what you have suggested to his mother and his therapist.  I am quite sure that they may feel that this is the right meds for him.  I also will look up these meds again to make sure that I haven't over looked something.  I hope that me bringing these things to their attention, may change their minds to slow down their decision to have him put in the residential.

Thank you again for your help.
