Q: Conducting research into bipolar disorder

I am due to start working on research into bipolar disorder with a number of individuals living with the condition and was wondering what issues I may encounter and what measures I should take to ensure the participants are comfortable at all times? The study will take some months to complete and I will need to meet with each participant on a number of different occassions.

There are countless issues you "may" encounter.  I am confident you will adapt to each  situation as it arises.  Treat each participant as you would treat anyone else, with or without a mental illness, who is giving their time to assist you in your study; be respectful and non-judgmental, whether the individual is chronic and experiencing symptoms, or stable and in remission.  I would hope you are following code of ethics and that your behavior and interaction will be guided by it and ethical at all times.
