Q: Married for 20 years to a man who is Bi Polar. He recently agreed to see a doctor for meds

I've been married to a man over 20 years with bi-polar disorder.  He recently agreed to see a doctor (psychiatrist).  The meds he is on are not working at all.  My children and I have been through hell and back.  My son (18) has tremendous amount of anger towards him and my daughter (14) is getting to that point.  He sees the dr. in a week and I want to go with to make sure he is sharing the same story indicating that his current meds are making his illness even worse.  I can't take much more.  The police have been here two days in a row because a fight has broken out between my son and him.  My daughter and I are literally in the middle of their fights.  I am at my breaking point.  I am so close to asking for a divorce, but I fear his retaliation, as he has no friends.  I am his best friend, mom, spouse, and have been listening to his verbal abuse for way too long.  Any advice?

Hi, endofrope. I second Megan's advice, with this to end: Your primary duty is to you and your kids, not your husband. I have bipolar, and all I ask is understanding and reasonable accommodation. I don't ask to be excused for my behavior. And no one should have to put up with abuse, with bipolar is to blame or not. Hopefully, your husband will start assuming responsibility, but if he doesn't then you need to protect you and your kids.

I think you should all seek a family therapy together. This way everyone can say their side and there is someone to mediate so a fight won't break out. Try this before considering a divorce im sure you and your children love him and you should try to patch it up before letting it go. Your children need to understand what he is going though they are young but they have seen his actions but not the reasons behind it. I hope things have gone well!!
