Q: can Bipolar 1, actually be an adrenal problem?

My daughter 25yrs old had a manic attack and was hospitalised and classified as Bipolar 1, I have taken her to a homeopath as well. He says he only picks up that she has a problem with her adrenal glands. Is this possible? She was also at the time of mania smoking lots of marajuana. Currently she is in a rehab for 5 mnths, she has been there for 3 weeks now, as she stopped the drugs but is constantly drinking alkahol, ontop of all the heavy meds she was taking.

Hi Jackie,

I'm afraid I would treat the advice of a homeopath with a great deal of skepticism. Medical science is still at a bit of a loss as to the actual cause of bipolar so quite why the adrenal glands should be suggested is beyond me. There is certainly a connection with the neurotransmitter system but this isn't necessarily the cause of bipolar disorder. There may in fact be more than a single cause and there also appears to be genetic vulnerability in some cases. Have a look at this Bipolar Disorder Overview article. It will help explain some of the background, risk factors, etc, related to bipolar disorder.

As to marijuana, the advice is to steer well clear. There is clear evidence of an association between this acting as a trigger to mental illness. Any psychoactive drug is bound to influence the biochemistry of the brain and will, by design, affect mood.
