Valerie,   It is safe if you are being treated by a competant psychiatrist.  You might research you medications on the internet, so you know more about them.  If you find anything you are concerned about, then you can confront the psychiatrist with what you know.  You also can seek out another psychiatrist.   Fill out and sign a release for your records, the current psychiatrist has, at the new psychiatrist's office before your appt. so that he will have them when you see him.
