Q: Does seroquel xr cause weight gain?

I've only been on seroquel xr a couple months. I got off Depokote because it caused me to gain 40 lbs. I was told that seroqel was a very good mood stabilizer that has little to no weight gain. I have lost no weight since starting seoquel xr- but I havent gained any either. I do go to the gym 4 times a week now. My husband has already lost 15 lbs. I have lost nada, 0.

Yes it can cause weight gain because it increases your appetite.  I was first on zyprexa and gained about 40 lbs.  I am now on seroquel, but still have not lost the weight!  I am also on Wellbutrin and Cymbalta, which have not really made a difference in helping to curb my appetite.  But the longer I am on the seroquel, it seems that my appetite has come back down and I don't eat as much.  You should ask your doc about other drugs that might help counteract the increase in appetite with the seroquel.  You should definitely just try to eat really good and get some exercise, as these should help too.

After I began to gain significant weight rather quickly, my psychiatrist told me that seroquel does tend to cause weight gain, and in combo with Lamictal and risperdone it is even more likely to do so. So he put me on topomax (50 mg) and welbutrin (300 mg) to combat the effect. I have lost a little of the weight with those drugs, and I'm in therapy which is helping me to understand why I eat (and it isn't always because I'm hungry). But before the topamax/welbutrin combo, I was ravenously hungry all the time. It was a fight not to keep eating and eating and eating. That eased quite a bit with the t/w. I hope this helps.

YIKES!  I gained 15 pounds in 3 months!  And, I swear I didn't change one thing in my eating habits.  I am going to ask my Dr. to switch to abilify.
