Hi, Mom2twins. I can only assume you're talking about a dose for a child. 2000 (that's 2 with three zeroes) mg is about the average adult dose range, depending on body weight, metabolic factors, etc. Some pdocs start on lower doses (say 500 mg) and build up.

 

There may be a valid reason for the low dose range (say as part of a combination strategy) but you need to ask your pdoc.

 

Also, when it comes to treating bipolar, pdocs generally don't distinguish between bp I and bp 2, but you may have an enlightened pdoc. Again, don't be afraid to ask hard questions.

 

Finally, you may have dropped a zero off of 60 mg. Maybe you meant 600. But off the top of my head none of these figures make sense. Valproic acid ( the equivalent of genereric Depakote) comes in multiples of 250 mg. and Depakote multiples of 500 mg and 1000 mg. You might want to check the figures again.
