Q: I just had a 3 day hell episode of hypomania. It won't return will it?

I am usually very 'on' key, but I just had a 3 days of hell of restlessness,

pacing the floors.  I couldn't stand at all.  I had other symtoms but this

was by far the worst!  My beloved stayed home because he was worried

about me.  Do I have to look forward to this again?  I need to tell my

pdoc tomorrow.

Hi, Nurz. Bipolar is a cycling illness, so you may well cycle back into hypomania, especially if you do nothing to prevent it. You sounded confused as to recognizing your triggers. You are in the right place to begin reading on this. Often, hypomania or mania or depression is "triggered" by some personal event in your life. Lack of sleep is Numero Uno. Stress is another. Or the stress may wreck your sleep, which in turn sets off the episode.

You can start by asking what was going on in your life immediately prior to the hypomania. Working too hard? Playing too hard? Drugs? Alcohol? Caffeine? Travel? Family issues? Work anxiety? Relationship hassles. I think you get the picture.

Once you start recognizing your triggers, you can work at making course corrections - in effect intercepting the mood episode before it happens. Cognitive behaivoral therapy will give you good training in this regard. So will mindfulness. Search either one on this site and happy reading.

John, I value your input but where are the trigger points listed.  Just before I had an argument with Comcast dude.  I was so upset and lost it.

Thank you for getting back to me.

It may happen again but there is no use in worrying about it.  Try to determine what the trigger was and seek ways of coping with it.  Counseling might be an avenue to assist with these and your psychiatrist may make an adjustment to your medication that might help as well.

Chances are it will happen again.  This happened to me and yes it happened again.  3 times to be exact and they were so severe I was hospitalized.  Usually they occur in winter time for me.  So it's a slow cycle.  It may be different for you.

If you want to die young, go to a doctor and have them prescribe you something that will cause you to either, hmm, I dunno . . . DOUBLE your weight, aquire diabetes, make you feel as if you have no emotion (robot-like), cause you to do things you would never NORMALLY do (such as take spending sprees at the 24hr walmart at 3 o'clock in the morning). Am I speaking from personal experience?  YOU BET!Wink

OR,  I would strongly recommend getting on an exercise ROUTINE (if you aren't already).  And I highly recommend lithium.  You can order it on Vitaminshoppe.com.

It is the only thing I have taken that has kept me manic free.
Hope this helps!

Yes I have been on Lithium for 27 years.  Great stuff for me!  Zyprexa did indeed double my weight and Yes I did aquire Diabetes!  You did you know?  My Beloved and I do roam Wally World at 3am or the like!  It is nice as long as you out skirt the pallets of merchandsice.  How do you know what your triggers are?  I need to know this one.  I was upset prior with the TV guy on the phone.  He was firing questions left and right and I was slammed down the phone, telling my beloved 'he is yours'!

I thought I was over it, because I was not in constant motionfor 4 hours.  2AM it came back Damn it!  I just keep running my hands through my hair and in constant movement.  I do exercise some, but I have a chronic back problem after my back surgery.

I am beside myself with this movement Frown, this constant movemnt.  Where can I get to know the triggers.
