Q: How can I mitigate my symptons of sluggishness

I have been on Lamictal 200mg, Geodon 80mg , and Paxil 20 mgfor two years after being diagnosed with Bipolar 11. Prior to this for over 10 years I was on combinations of antidepressents and stimulants. I have been very calm and even temperedfor the last two years feeling a general sense of well being. When I tried to cut out the Geodon(with my psychiatrist) the depression returned.

I have a very low level of energy and also have to fight to keep my weight in check. I have gained about 12 pounds from my prior correct weight. I have to force myself to exercise when in the past when not depressed I exercised regularly. So now I exercise very infrequently.

My depression used to be extremly severe with periodic periods of hypomania so I don't even toy with the idea of giving up my meds. But now I also have 0 libido and can sit all day and work and then just read in the evening. I am so lazy. I ear very healthy and have a stable marriage and good friends.

Help. Is there another antipsychotic other than Geodon that wouldn't effect my weight, my energy, and my libido. I know it is not the Paxil because I have been taking it for 8 years.

Hi, Jeanne. It's tempting for patients to recommend a specific med, but this is a matter that you need to sit down and discuss with your pdoc. Tell your pdoc exactly what you said here. This should get the conversation going. Hope this helps -
