I took lithium for the first few years, then participated in a mood disorder program (free meds) that combined lithium and depakote together. It worked for years, but my weight was +70 pounds after 5 years. I kept telling myself that being fat and happy was better. (but i'm guilty for not exercising/eating as I should). Fast forward to 4 years ago: I began to have issues with both meds after I stopped taking them correctly. (stopped and started)
I started taking Lamictal about 2 years ago along other meds. It doesn't have the weight gain or hair loss (which I got) that those others had.
Ask your Doctor about Lamictal. Google it and read up on it too.

I gained at least 60 lbs. & went from size 9/10 to 18/20 (womens). Taking topomax seemed to begin the process of losing weight & am now size 12/14 with about 30 lbs. lost. I would like to lose another 30 lbs. but AM thankful for this weight lost. The only change was the 3xday Topomax so I do not know if that is the reason I began losing weight but I am disabled so exercising is not really possible in the conventional standards. I do eat 1/2 sandwich, a few chips & pickle with water or ice tea & that satisfies me. An occasional cookie or scoop of ice cream is included, but as a whole, I eat but NOT until I FEEL full. A piece of fruit or small yogurt as a snack seems to work well. I enjoy veggies & a bowl of soup. I do the best I can to eat small amounts but as long as I feel satisfied the issue of EATING in itself is not given much thought. Eating out, I eat half of the meal & the rest go home for another meal. I do not have BP problems, have strong bones for my age & that helps eating pretty much I want. I DO NOT eat sauces, fatty meats & make sure I eat calcium full foods.
