Q: My Son was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder

My Son was just diagnosed with bipolar disorder and the psychiatrist that he is seeing has him on lamictal 25mg working up and had him on 50mg of seoquel. Then he kept having bad manic episodes so she switched him to seroquel xr 200 mg and he seems like a zombie. Should he go back to the 50 mg of seroquel?

You have to discuss this with the psychiatrist, he may just need to go up a little slower on the Seroquel. The smallest dose Seroquel comes in is 25mg tablets, your son's psychiatrist may take him off the seroquel XR and gradually increase the Seroquel dose in 25 mg increments, that is how my seroquel dose was increased. The body has to get used to the medication and Extended release formulations do not work the same in everybody. Do not change his medication yourself!!!! Good luck- and sometimes it helps to take seroquel at night to ameliorate the sedating side effects.I wish you and your son the best.

when my fiance was diagnosed with bipolar, his doctor started him at a high dosage of extended relief serequel 300mg. hi was a zombi too!  after a manic apisode she said it was crucial that he got his rest.. rest is important for everyone, but especially for one w/ bipolar. Hes now at 50mg, and that works for him.    Your sons doctor will alter the dosages.  make sure your son doesnt alter it himself...   Good luck! :)
