Hi, Matilda. Where do I start? Drug-drug interactions, street drugs sabotaging what the prescription drugs are supposed to be doing - on and on.
The big danger, though, as I see it, is your husband may be rationalizing his street drug habit by telling you the prescription meds even him out. If this sounds dumb, it is but an addict will use any rationalization available.
Your husband may be self-medicating. This is a frequent occurrence with mood disorders. The meth high may lift him from his depression. Plus it gives him an instant high. This is the difference between street drugs and prescription meds. Psych meds don't give you an instant high.
But in the long term the meth crashes him back into depression, creating the need for another fix. A craving, an instatiable one. It's not so much the high anymore, he has to stop the craving. And any stupid rationalization will fly. Such as - there's no danger of him getting high because he's on a mood stabilizer.
Co-occuring bipolar and substance use is challenging from every angle. You can't just treat one and ignore the other. On top of it, you have to contend with your husband's denials and rationalizations. And lies.
I wish I could give you an easy answer.
