Q: Have there been any studies that show a connection between Bipolar Disorder and Asperger's Syndrome?

Most of the people I have met with Asperger's Syndrome either have a second diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, or have a relative with Bipolar Disorder. I have Bipolar Disorder and my son has Asperger's Syndrome.

I haven't researched this yet but I can tell you from personal experience that my younger brother has both plus a few others to throw into the mix; such as ADD, etc...

It's a real challenge but a good psychiatrist is able to help.

I have Asperger's syndrome and comorbid Bipolar. At 17 I was diagnosed with Asperger's and when 19 - 20 I got Bipolar diagnosis (my shrink had to know me pretty well to confirm that). Now I'm twenty and clearly show signs of both Bipolar and Asperger's syndrome. As I have studied this and researched over the internet, there is allot of comorbidity. So it's nothing unusual to have both. Both my shrink and my psychologist who both know me really well for few years, confirmed that this is nothing unusual to have both. As for anyone, if you have Asperger's or any other autism spectrum disorder, it does not prevent you to have another disorder as well. It's the same as with any other people. And yes, some studies show (as I researched the topic on the internet) that it is fairly common and that many children with Asperger's also show signs of a mood disorder. And definitely that there is a connection as both share a genetic link and it's also not uncommon that the child has Asperger's and parent has Bipolar or vice versa... also not uncommon with grandparents... both are genetic disorders. Hope this answers your question pretty well.
