I'm with you ... I wouldn't want him to stop what he has been taking unless there is a real problem there.  Wondering why he went to a new doctor?  I had to because the one I used to go to left that office and wouldn't tell where he went.  I found another good doctor.  I tend to like the ones that are "conservative" in that they are very careful when it comes to changing your medication or dosage.  My first doctor was very "slow" with me - but in the long run, it was best for me.  It was a process, but I got where I needed to be with his help.  If your husband does need to stop what he has been taking, it'll need to be gradual and the doctor should help with that.  I've been on the same med and dosage for 2.5 years and hoping it stays this way!
