Q: Could I be hospitalized for suicidal thoughts?

I have been living with bipolar disorder for 15 years, most of them without medication. I had a baby in November and I feel like I did when I was first diagnosed, suicidal and crazy. I'm afraid to tell anyone or get help because when I did that years ago they would put me in a crisis unit if I mentioned suicide. I can't leave my son, what do I do? I'm getting scared.

New Mom:

If you are having suicidal thoughts, P.L.E.A.S.E. call someone you trust and talk with them.  What you are experiencing may be some sort of chemical unbalance.  Rapid cycling, mixed states, some facet of post partum depression or mental unwellness.  Medication would be most helpful.  Please contact your physician post haste, your baby needs you.

New Mom,

Most states do have a 72-hour hold involuntary commitment if you are judged to be a danger to yourself or others.  I am afraid for you as I read your question.  Are you afraid to tell someone about your suicidal thoughts for fear of being hospitalized or are you afraid that you will act on your suicidal thoughts.  Personally, I have found a great therapist and she knows me well enough to know when my suicidal thinking enters the danger zone.  Do you have a plan?  Do you have the means?  At the very least, call a suicidal hotline or a friend, relative, that you trust.  Don't carry this all yourself it is too big.  I know the feelings.  If you can tell someone or at least give yourself 24 hours before doing anything and sometimes just stepping back can give you some new perspectives.  Please feel free to contact me or please don't let this go for your sake and your baby's.  Dolle
