Testosterone treatment for delayed puberty for BP 16 yo male

Monica
09/14/08

DS16 (BP, PSS-NOS, Tourettes, ADHD, OCD, anxiety, delayed puberty) has been seeing a pediatric endocrinologist at major teaching hospital for 2 years. DS16 is still in Tanner 1 stage. Doc is strongly recommending Testosterone treatment to jump start puberty. He is mainly concerned with his bone health.DS16 is an adoptee and no family history if available other than that birthparents were 18 and 19.

My DH and I, along with our team of pdocs and tdocs, are extremely hesitant to start testosterone treatment. We are so worried that he will become even more violent and will start to physically act out his hypersexuality. He is an ultra-rapid cycler who is currently mostly stable on 2 mood stabilizers and 2 anti-psychotics. He had a 17-day hospitalization in March for mania.

We can't find any information on the effect of this treatment, what to expect, whether it is crucial to his health. Can he live a successful life without going through puberty?

Any advice would be appreciated,

Monica

My brother had a friend who was late to start puberty.  He was 15 or 16 and the doctor put him on testosterone.  He got a deep voice and did fine.  He went on to get married and had kids.  He wasn't violent.  It really helped him.
