Q: Looking for help in Ohio - A unique story!

My husband of 7 years is duo diagnosis. BiPolar (Rapid Cycler) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. When I met him 7 years ago, I noticed that he had noticable episodes of manic followed by deep depression. They seemed to occur in cycles which were trackable by days - approximately 4 then manic followed by the next day - then extremely low. Being an Ex-Social Worker - I grew concerned as I watched this behavior for months.

I knew that previously he had a head injury at the age of 12 years old - a severe car accident where he was hit on his bicycle and trapped under the vehicle ending up hospitalized. I also knew that he had behavioural difficulties long before I showed up on the scene from friends and family members I conversed with when my suspecions grew.

I took him to a Psychiatrist who confirmed my suspicions. BiPolarism - Rapid Cycler. I also found out that he had issues resulting from a sibling sexual assault and another relative sexual assault when he was a young boy. This I also found out was unbeknown to his parents until we spoke to them shortly after his diagnosis. They, to this day, stay in denial concerning the information given to them. His mother is in her mid-80's and as I suspect does not have the energy nor the sense to acknowledge any of this.

His father deceased with in the last 2 years. The siblings fail to acknowledge it, as rightly who would if the older son was infact guilty. The sister brushes it all as a fabrication of his mental illness as I suspect so does his mother.

In the mid 80's he was seen by a Doctor although I am unclear what the diagnosis was as the Doctor has since died and thus his records unobtainable. At the time my husband and his then wife had built a successful enterprise which unfortunately took a hit to the physical building and machinery, which translated into a sum of money's from their insurance company. Soon after she filed for divorce and all his rights to his joint company with her were suspended by her and her lawyer. He was basically cowersed into playing nice as she had another issue hanging over his head - a fabricated domestic violence charge that stuck but was unfounded yet supported by a substance abuse councellor who was not trained in mental health issues apart from drug/alcohol councelling and had no knowledge of the intricate diagnosis of BiPolarism, PSTD nor how many fall into substance abuse issues due to lack of meds, manic episodes or self-medicating. My understanding from his Psychiatrist and from reading on the web - It is not uncommon for those who suffer with this disease to fall into substance abuse problems. The D&D Councellor was quick to believe the wife of the time and condemn him not realising there was an underlying issue and that there indeed was problems int the marriage and perhaps an alleged hidden financial agenda on her part.

He was convicted regardless of his innocence and at the time suffered with the disease as he does today.

Shortly after the divorced started with his condemnation and under duress of this past deal with her. The company they shared paid both her legal and his legal fees, his lawyer and her lawyer were sharing space on the same hallway and he was told to basically play nice.

Years later when I came into his life - I read his divorce decree when he told me that he did not get treated as he should have based on the fact - he was the founder of the company, shared equal partnership in its success etc and what had transpired in terms of legal representation and how at the time he was noticably ill which all parties (his included) negated. He was left homeless, penniless and given a mere portion of what the company, home, property were worth. There was no children involved. The house was his grandfathers. The company started on a loan taken out by him and he was locked out of it all by her. At the time, he says he was not in any shape or mindset to know his rights and that he was taken up the river by all including what he says was a lawyer given to him by her lawyer.

He is now hoping to rectify what was done to him but we can not find a lawyer who recognizes that stature of limitations with regard to mentally ill people does not apply as it does with the norm of the population.

We have done research to see that there are rules of stature of time frame that seem not to apply in his case as he is permanently disabled.

We need to find someone to speak on his behalf, listen to his case and who is versed in these matters to help him rectify what was done over a decade ago.

Does anyone know where or to who we can turn. We are not financially set by any means and could use all the help we can find. We live in Ohio. This has affected him greatly and needs to be set straight as he could not do for himself back then and moreso now. My understanding is that he was at that time under a Doctors care which was never acknowledged and he was too ill at the time to know different.

Thank you.
