Q: my sister thinks she can stop taking her bi polar medication is this true?

My sister has been a mess all her life she is now 67 years old. 3 years ago I took her to my doctor and she diaognoised her with bi polar my sister takes Seroquil. My sister now thinks after 3 years she feels fine and she dose not need to take her meds any more. Is this right?

Hi, Rachel. It is common for patients who are doing well on meds to think they don't need them. And it is also common for friends of patients to feel the patient doesn't need them, either. She may be right - perhaps her illness has remitted - but it is generally better to err on the side of staying on the meds. Trust me, all of us have felt like flushing our meds down the toilet at one time or another. We don't like the daily reminder that something is wrong with us. In any case, this is an issue she needs to discuss with her doc. If she insists on going off, it should be under her doc's supervision. The last thing you want is for her to go off on her own without telling anyone. Hope this helps -

Well according to her she has told her Doctor. And the Doctor said it was ok. But you know as well as I do then, that bi polar victims think they are always right. She has been off of them now for 4 days and she is already going 90 miles an hour. I'm thinking of contacting her Doctor who is my Doctor as well.
