Is it herediary?

My mother aged 77 has bipolar (really ill in hospital at the moment) diagnosed in 2006 - we were told this was brought on by the shock of my father dying.  A friend has told me that she knows a family where three members have it and that it is hereditary - does this mean that other members of my family could get bipolar?

Hi, Lorraine. Your question contains the answer. There is clear evidence the illnesss runs in families. What this means is that many of us are genetically predisposed to react badly to stress, etc. Some people with BP genes may never manifest BP. In stress-ridden societies like the US, however, BP is far more likely.
