Q: how to educate your family and friends

I was diagnosed with bipolar when I was 12 years old and my family still hasn't attempted to find out what the disease is, they keep telling me to "talk myself out of it", if I push for them to find out more, they say that I am paying too much attention to it and that it will go away if I dont think about it.

What is the best way to get them involved for my safety? I want them to take this seriously because I am currently having the worst depressive episode since having been diagnosed and I need their support.

Thx

Haley,

If you are in counseling or can get into counseling, it may help you help you greatly by helping you to learn skills to cope with your depression.  It may also provide you and avenue to educate a family member by having them sit in on some of your sessions.  Unfortunately, some people, that do not have a mood disorder, do not realize that it is not that easy to shrug off depression.  In their experience, the the ups and downs of life are not so severe and getting back to normal may be easy for them.
