Looking for professional advise

Gloria Segura
10/09/08

I'm bypolar 1 and I'm trying to go back to school in order to find a job and be able to support myself.  I don't have any family to count on and my minimum wage job is barely paying my rent.  Could anybody suggest what kind of profession should I get involved with that is not stressful considering my struggling mental health condition?. I was suggested to go into nursing,  try to get my LVN and after that my RN. Is anybody out there that can by experience tell me if getting into this field study will be possible for me to do?  I'm very confused and scared about what to do with my life because I don't know if I will be able to handle the stress associated with it.  I know it would immensely help me to hear from somebody involved into health care or a nursing career that is bipolar and is succesfull in life.

Hi Gloria! I live with a bipolar disorder and I personally consider that being a nurse would be too stressful for me because you have to deal with a lot of people in your work. Communication with people makes me very tired. You'll have to deal with ill people who suffer - that's a stress for me. But on the other hand the thought that you are helping these ill people can be very helpfull for you. And I am afraid I can hurt someone when penetrating a vein with a needle. I also had problems with finding the right job for myself, suffered and went through a lot of stress from working at wrong places doing wrong things, even had to go to psychiatric hospitals twice in a state of depression. Now I work as a translator (written translations) and this is a perfect job for people with our illness. It's a job with minimum stress. But of course you need some talent for foreighn language. But! I know one girl who is not bipolar, but just depressive, she worked as a nurse and liked it. But now she works as a secretary, I don't know whyexactly she quit nursing, but I can ask if you want. Let me know. Hang on! I can imagine how hard it is to cope with our illness without a family. I could't survive without my mom's support.

I was also diagnosed with bi-polor, I worked in nursing for 14 years, it is very stressful, there is ALOT of heavy lifing on patient's. The demands are non-stop.  The process of obtaining your LPN or RN degree are brutal, you need at least a year of biology, you will need chemistry, anatomy & phsiology, plus many more specific classes.  I would look into the field of mental health and human services instead, because, you already know what the deal is and you understand it, you have experienced it yourself.  It is an easier feild of study if you like pychology stuff.  There are a variety of jobs you will be able to do, such as work in a group home (there are many different kinds), work at a pychiatric hospital and many other jobs. I don't want to discourage you in any way, you can do it.  I bet you would love college it is great!!  Go for it now while you are still young.  You have nothing to lose by trying.  Good luck..
