Q: The BPD drug Abilify-will it send patients into depression since it keeps them from manic episodes?

I was just recently diagnosed and am starting on Abilify today. I'm concerned about this: Since Abilify is used to keep patients with BiPolar Disorder from having manic episodes, is there a chance that it will swing me into a depressive state? I'm worried that this drug will not be the mood stabilizer that I need and that it will send me into depression, something that I dread and am very concerned about. Does anyone have experience with taking this drug? If so, how did you react to it? Did you become depressed, or did it act as a mood stabilizer? Did you have any troubling side effects? I've read the package insert and the possible side effects sound terribly scary.

I appreciate anything you can tell me, and thanks in advance for answering my question!

I noticed this post was a couple weeks ago.  How are you doing on the Abilify?

Actually my doctor put me on it and I called her about a week later chattering away about nothing, clearly on a manic and questioned if this was a good med for me.  She said.. well... it should be. (Grimace)  So she told me to break the pills in half (these are the 5 mg).  Just perfect, I have been alot more stable.  I've been prone to mixed episodes alot in the past and I seem to be cruising now.  BUT... I've noticed my anger rises alot easier.  Don't know if it's the work situation or from the abilify (both started about the same time).
