Q: is caffine bad for people that have bipolar

I just found out my daughter has bipolar. She is 16 and sometimes I dont know what to do to help her feel happy or to understand her. I heard there is food that changes mood can you tell me what are those foods so I can keep an eye on what changes her moods. Anything will help.

ThanksLaughing

I don't know if there are any specific foods to stay away from, but my psychiatrist did tell me cut down on caffeine. He also told me to stay away from the energy drinks and any dieting type pill that gives you energy, even the ones that say they are just appetite suppressants, as they usually have caffiene in them as well.

I still drink coffee and tea, I just cut down on them and don't drink soda's.

Good luck, and hope all goes well for you both!

My husband is bipolar and his psychiatrist suggested staying a way or limiting caffeine because of the importance of sleep when you have bipolar.  Sleep is so very important and of course we know caffeine doesn't help in that area.  From what I've read an all around healthy diet and exercise is good for everyone.  I've also read fish oil is good for moods as well as for the heart so my hubby takes that as well with his meds.
