Q: Trileptal for a head injury, as a preventative measure?

Dr. says i only have to take it for approx. 2 years, maybe less, because of the head injury.  He claims this will prevent me from having a seizure while my brain heals.  I have not had any seizures but because of the injury, i have a 25 percent chance of having one within the next 2 years. Has anyone else heard of this?

Hit Mare...Trileptal is listed as a Anti-Seizure medication.  But they also found that is also works for bipolar.  I've been on it for nearly 6 years for both reasons.  Did he tell you how much he wanted you to take?  My seizures cause my feet to go out from under me, and I either trip or land on my face. Or  whatever I might be holding could end up across the room.  These are small seizures, but can be very annoying.  I would think he'd put you on a low dose.  Not like what I take, which is 2400mgs a day.  Let me know what you end up doing.  I am indeed sorry that you are going through such a trial in your life..I pray that you return to good health soon.

Thanks for the well wishes, hope you are doing well also.  He's got me on 1500 mg.  I'm experiencing loss of coordination, facial twitching and memory problems.  I just cut myself back by 150 mg. to try and reduce these side effects.  The Dr. said he would cut my dosage back once we do a blood test, if all is well.  I did the blood test but I still don't know.  It's hard to get an appointment and hard to reach him by phone.  I'm going for other opinions now because of this.  This Dr. seems to have alot of leeway when it comes to the amount of time I have to be on this medication.  That makes me a little wary also.  For instance, it was 2 years at first.  Now it's 'maybe a year'.  He has an excellent reputation though.  Do you think 1500 or 1350 mg. is good for a person who has no seizures and is not bi-polar?  Thanx.
