bipolar and a person with severe brain damage

i have a loved one who has severe brain damage from birth, therefore is profoundly retarded, and was diagnosed several years with bp.  she doesnt talk, so, i dont know how they can make an accurate diagnosis.  i do agree she shows many symptoms (poor sleep habits, mild mania come spring,), but, i have to wonder, could the symptoms be related to the brain damage.  there is no bp to the best of my knowledge in my family.

Hi, fran. You raise a very good point. The important thing is to convince your loved ones docs to treat her sleep. Often bipolar can be managed by managing sleep.

You mention mild mania. I'm guessing, but this sounds like something you can handle. If this is the case, and you don't detect your loved one in distress, please let the docs know.

I'm also guessing that she there are paid caregivers. Which suggests their jobs become easier if your loved one is sedated. This may not be the case, but you have every right to be suspicious and give the third degree to those charged with her care.

Oh yeh, you're a hero. My (Red Sox) hat off to you :)
