bipolar and a person with severe brain damage

i have a loved one who has severe brain damage from birth, therefore is profoundly retarded, and was diagnosed several years with bp.  she doesnt talk, so, i dont know how they can make an accurate diagnosis.  i do agree she shows many symptoms (poor sleep habits, mild mania come spring...
