I am 51 and I always thought I just had depression, I now believe it is a biopolar disorder, how do I talk to my doctor about this? and what is the downside of not doing anything? Thank you

If you have a psychiatrist who treats you for depression, simply tell him your concerns and the symptoms you have noticed. If you do have Bipolar Disorder, don't you think it would be best that you are treated for it? If you are concerned about your symptoms and they are creating difficulty in your life, then it may be good to present them to your doctor and see what he or she believes is the cause and if there is something that may be done.
There is always a downside to ignoring a problem. If you ignore a problem, it does not get solved or addressed and may become worse. Sometimes, if a person who has Bipolar disorder is misdiagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and treated, it is possible that an antidepressant may trigger an episode of hypomania or mania.
hi i made a mistake by replying to the answer she gave you
i said that you should read by kay redfield jamison "an un quiet mind--a memoir of moods and mmaddness"
that should answer your question
i think that she is right
an anti depression will make you manic
it will all pan out
just be honest
with your doctors
peace be with you
