Q: Hi! Does hypomanic episodes have a connection with cognitive impairments in the long term? And is there any other cause for these impairments in bipolar patients besides the mood episodes?

I´ve read manic and depressive episodes have this effect and that dementia is more common on elder bipolar individuals.

As far as hypomania goes, there is this study (written in journal format, not easy reading).  It basically explains how the bipolar groups studied (manic, hypomanic, depressed) displayed a lower cognitive function than the group of people who have never had any type of psychiatric illness.
