I have not looked into the side effects of Lamictal.  I take Lithium which is also a mood stabilizer and does tend to flatten affect to some extent.  I quickly glanced at Google entries regarding Lamictal and flat affect and did see some self reports of it.  So your observation of 'cold heartedness' may be due to Lamictal. 

 

I took a small dose of it along with Lithium, years ago, and had the reaction of agitation and anger.  I stopped taking it right away.
