My son is 18 years of age. We adopted him when he was 3 years old. At the time we knew his birth parents both were in Mental Hospital. His birth mother suffers from Paranoid Schizophreniza and his birth father was hospitalized for Anti-Social Behavior.

Lately my son has mentioned he feels depressed and has racing thoughts. What is his likelihood of developing a mental illness. Thank you, Whitediamonds

Hi Whitediamonds,

There is no certainty that your adopted son will develop a psychotic illness although his chances will have increased by virtue of the family history. Schizophrenia is actually a classification under which come the different types (e.g. paranoid).

It might help if I direct you to another site on the network called SchizophreniaConnection.com.

To get the ball rolling, this link will take you to an article that introduces the features, signs and symptoms of schizophrenia. You will quickly see other links that are likely to answer your most pressing questions.

Hope this helps

The first signs are that they experience and see all kinds of bugs or anything that crawls around that is not really there.  In actual fact it is there imagination.  They see and hear things. The best way to find out is to have him evaluated by professional.  There are medications available to treat all mentall ilnesses.  Do not prolong but take him as soon as possible for peace of mind.
