It depends on how much time you have taken off. When going on short-term disability, notify HR right away. Have your psychiatrist file FMLA paperwork ASAP - this protects your job. If you are away for 90 days continuous, then the company can only guarantee a similar position, not necessarily the same position/pay. Take the time you need in outpatient, but when outpatient becomes a crutch because you fear going back to work, it's probably time to go back to work.
