Q: EVIDENCE SUPPORTING GROUP THERAPE FOR BIPOLAR DISORDER PATIENTS TO COMBAT INSURANCE

MY SISTER'S INSURANCE COMPANY WANTS TO CUT DOWN HER THERAPY TO ONCE A WEEK INSTEAD OF TWICE.  THEY STATED THAT HER "crisis utilization has been achieved" AND THAT SHE "can be properly treated with less treatments." THIS IS DISHEARTENING BECAUSE SHE RECENTLY RE-ENTERED THE HOSPITAL MENTAL ILLNESS PROGRAM ON AN OUTPATIENT BASIS.  TWICE SHE WAS HOSPITALIZED AS AN INPATIENT, AND 4 TIMES AS AN OUTPATIENT.  OBVIOUSLY, CUTTING BACK ON HER THERAPY IS NOT THE ANSWER.  I NEED SUGGESTIONS AND EVIDENCE SUPPORTING HER GROUP THERAPY.  SHE CURRENTLY RECEIVES PSYCHOTHERAPY, GROUP THERAPY, AND MEDICATION.  IT WOULD BE TOUGH TO REMOVE THE PSYCHOTHERAPY FROM THE EQUATION SO THAT SHE CAN GO BACK TO GROUP.  TELL ME WHAT GROUP THERAPY DOES FOR YOU AND IF YOU HAVE EVIDENCE SUPPORTING IT, I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW.

To start off...this is a very PRIVATE matter, and it is different from one person to the next.  Now if your sister wants to give you permission to go with her to therapy and see for yourself, thats a different matter all together.  But what is said stays between therapist and patient.
