Q: When having a manic episode, does substance abuse often occur?

When having a manic episode, does substance abuse often occur? I have been having what I believe to be manic episodes for a little over two years now. Because of a recent event, a manic event, I lost my boyfriend. These manic episodes I have always seem to be driven on by major substance abuse. Do the two go hand in hand?

Hi, brandimarie. I second the comments here. Just a thing or two: You've identified the problem, but chances are you are going to find quitting very difficult, so please do not hesitate to seek help.

Also, chances are your habits are tied into a lifestyle where you are "abusing" sleep. My guess is you are staying up well into the night and sleeping into the afternoon. Even if this only happens on weekends, it takes days to get back in sync. The experts all agree that lack of sleep is the royal road to mania.

It is no accident that bipolar tends to break out when kids become college age. This is when the drinking and drug use and crazy sleeping starts up big time, so you need to bring all this under control.

I know you want to fit in with your peers, but the fact that you lost a boyfriend means you are paying one hell of a price for conforming. And - if you keep veering out of control - you will have no friends to conform to.

Support groups can be very helpful at reinforcing these messages and helping you manage your life. Hope this helps ...

Definitely.  In highschool, all my friends went to parties like I did but they didn't get as carried away with the drinking as me - even when I had no reason, I would go so hard.  It seemed to bring me higher & I liked the feeling too much to stop.  Even though there were terrible behaviours I displayed, it didn't stop me.  Even though it made my depression worse over time, it didn't stop me.  Once I got out of the partying scene & built a healthier lifestyle, my moods evened out more.  I still like to drink to this day, regularly, but rarely binge.  Funny enough, when my meds are working as they should, I don't even crave drinking.

I just learned this yesterday - that most drugs like heroin and cocaine are water-soluble, so they leave your system within days; but marijana is fat-soluble so it takes months or even years to get out of your system completely.  A friend of mine has just quit pot. Smoking pot had helped her anxiety, but since she quit, her depression has really acted up.

Drug & alcohol use just seems to be a losing battle & the less you do, the better.  Or realistically, at least try to limit it.  Good luck.

I've tried to limit the pot smoking down to 2 a day.  Stressful days I succumb to more.. opps.

It is self medicating and at times it seems to be the only thing that brings down the racing thoughts.

Yeah, I am a big pot smoker and can be a big drinker when I want to be.  I went to the psychiatrist for the first time in a long time the other day and they are suggesting I go 6 weeks completely sober so they can properly medicate me.  I'm gonna do it, because I know it's going to help me.  I haven't been sober for 6 weeks in 11 years or so, so it's about time.  Wish me luck!!

Good Luck to you.  Do you ever isolate yourself when you start feeling down?  I do that.  Isolation sux.
