Q: A question about meds with other meds

I am on 1250mg of Valproic Acid a day and I recently got prescribed to Ritalin for my ADHD.  Since I've been taking the Ritalin I have had extreme mood swings during the day, causing me feel depressed, even to the point of always crying.  Is this something I'm going to have to expect from now on or is it possible for this to go away during treatment?

See a doctor, tell them your having issues - that you got worse when you started ritalin.....i was on valporic acid for bipolar.

with bipolar, it's a continual tweaking of meds.  every body is different and needs a different mix of meds.

drugstore.com is pretty cool to see drug interactions....but sometimes the feedback from the site is cryptic doctor-speak - or generic paragraphs.

(I saw your 2nd post in the comments.)

If you're just going to quit smoking pot for 6 weeks so they can medicate you, then after 6 weeks go back to pot smoking, it's not going to work.  Because you made a change to your situation.  You need to make a decision if you can really quit pot smoking for life.   Alcohol, they frown upon, but if your stable (not manic or depressed), one drink may be ok.  Ask your doctor.  Valporic Acid is rough on the liver, so heavy alcohol and Valporic Acid will rot out your liver.  Plus, when I drank heavy while taking Valporic Acid, I would start seeing pinweels and get dizzy.  It was real scary.

But if you really want to get things under control - you should quit the pot smoking for life.

I was lucky.  In High School, I could take it or leave it.  Many of my friends though got addicted to pot and did it daily.

For racing thoughts when I can't sleep - they have me on Trazadone.  It works like a charm.  Clears my head right out and I'm out like a light.  Unfortunately, Trazadone doesn't work when I'm manic.  They say trazadone is not addictive.  It's labeled as an anti-depressant, but is prescribed for sleep.  It's cheap too, it's generic.

I meant to have said drugs.com

I pulled up drugstore.com the other day and realized my mistake.  I was looking up seroquin to see if it would jive with the lithium.  Seroquin sucks too, my family doctor hates all anti-psychotic meds as they wreak havok on your blood.

But they work & they can take the edge off of a manic state.

RE: your other question that I posted about.  I can symphathize very well.  I am a heavy cigarette smoker, have been for like 20+ years.  Now, I am pre-emphasema.  And the family doctor is really riding me hard.  He's a fabulous doctor.  But it's tough.  Life really sucks sometimes.

Any advice would be appreciated.
