Q: Are there any natural therapies for mania/ hypomania? NEED HELP!

My G.P has upped my dose of Seroquel and it makes me terribly sleepy... which means I can't take it on the days I work... I'd like to find some natural remedies/ therapies that will help... and would like to take those ideas to my doctor... he seems to think that at the moment I won't be able to handle things without meds... I desperately want to prove him wrong! I can't cope when I'm manic my mind gets scrambled and it can get downright scary! My partner is struggling to cope and I'm terrorfied he'll leave me during those times. But then on the other hand I can't function on my meds, I'm far too sedated to do anything that I want to/ need to do and it's frustrating! Any advice on anything natural that will help with mood would be awesome, at the moment I've been trying to regulate my sleep patterns, which gets scrambled when I'm up... GAH! NEED HELP!

I'm not aware of any SAFE natural therapies, but if the sedation is too great, you need to ask your doctor about the possibility of changing from Seroquel to a less sedating antipsychotic. They don't all make you as sleepy as Seroquel does. Also, are you taking it during the day or only at night? Considering how sedating it is, taking it during the day isn't recommended.

My friend suggested smoking Majijuana as that helps her when she's having issues with mania... for me I think that would accentuate things and lead me into psychosis, even at the best of times when I've smoked it I've landed up manic and out of control

I had a chat to my GP and he said that I could take the extra dose of seroquel at night instead, he also referred me to psych for a review on my meds to see if there was anything else to try... they suggested therapy and took me off Citalopram...  as I didn't want to take it any more...

I'm quite clear minded at the moment so there is really no need to intervene with meds etc in the meantime...

You asked about natural therapies. Holy Basil in a capsule, not a tea. There is a lot of information on the Internet to read about this. As far as dosaging, I would recommend seeing a naturopath dr. You may be able to work with your dr. On this, just depends on his knowledge of natural supplements. I learned about this at a Bipolar group. One of the members has been taking it for 9 months and doing very well (taking no meds). I told my psych. Dr. And she told me to bring in the literature that states Holy Basil helps with Bipolar. Hope this helps. Reply
